The ICE-City Erfurt has a central, downtown location on the edge of the historic old town, whose medieval centre is one of the most beautiful in Germany. Erfurt is a growing city. Migration has seen its population rise to over 205,000 in recent years. Forecasts predict a rate of around 1,000 migrants a year by 2035, and these do not yet take into account the positive effects expected to be generated by the ICE hub.
As centre for business, Erfurt is characterised by a balanced mix of producing industries, services and retail trade, with a focus on micro-system technology, mechanical and plant engineering, logistics, horticulture, foodstuffs, (children’s) media and the creative industry. The city also benefits from the dynamic economic development in the “Impulsregion” of Erfurt-Weimar-Jena and environs.
With a university and two technical colleges, Erfurt is a centre for tertiary education. Three more universities, a music college and two technical colleges are located within a 50-kilometre radius. The universities and industry-oriented scientific and research institutions co-operate closely with the local businesses.
Erfurt enables a good work-life balance. The number of placements offered at crèches and kindergartens is very good compared to cities in western Germany. Meanwhile, diverse cultural services, attracting dining options, good shopping facilities, numerous parklands, and the woodlands and lakes in the surrounding area make for a high quality of life.
